We were hired by a private contractor to figure out why the miners on a planet we call "Thermopylae" stopped working. All of them went on strike, saying they weren't paid enough to deal with monsters. We're looking into it, since the material they were mining is supposed to have magic properties.

Robert: Okay, uh, where do I begin...

About two hundred hears ago, at the turn of the twenty-first century, some guy whose name began with "Dr." discovered a metaphysical energy that can be channeled, and reshape reality to the will of those who know how to manipulate it. In essence, Magic is that energy. Needless to say, this revolutionized technology, and crystals and computer chips suddenly became magically empowered, and could do everything harder, better, faster, and stronger. This led to a space race, an arms race, and a whole slew of political shit that I'm still trying to make sense of.

Jump forward to modern day. There's a guild of Techno-mages who specialize in becoming so proficient with Magitech that they can go into extremely dangerous situations and destroy everything. Magitech has it's limits, and it's price, but for those, like myself, who think the benefits outweigh the risks, there's a ton of profit to be gained.

Robert: That's the gist of it, anyway. I'm not too good at explaining this stuff. You'd probably have to talk with one of the guildmasters for a better explanation.

So we're basically a secretive force that goes in and takes care of stuff for pay due to our awesome abilities?

Arkos: I honestly don't know what to believe-karak. All I know is that I have four dead miners, and no one saw what happened-karak. One of my miners says he saw it, but he's been very hostile recently-karak. I discourage you from speaking to him-karak.

Galos: The creature killed Michael, and turned to it. It took it's mining laser, and shot the creature. The creature laughed, and charged at it. It took the creature's neck with a righteous fury, and hurdled the creature against the wall. The creature stood, an unholy snarl echoing from the throat. It was...afraid. The creature lashed out again, and bit it in the arm. It screamed, and put it's hand on the creature's head, before snapping the neck. The creature fell.

wait... is the banging happening in a pattern? also if you are downwind then smelling strength is pointless because smell does not travel against the wind.

it sounds like they know what ever is down there is very dangerous, and are planing on collecting the corpse once you deal with it so they can get another sample of whatever is in its bite. possible its venom has mutagenic qualities because it sounds like the affected miner has increased strength. sounds like we have a very nasty Alien beastie on our hands.

It looks like they think fire would be very detrimental to their purposes, for whatever reason. Probably don't want you burning the corpses or something like that. I don't know if that's good or bad. The fact that they're not letting you in on this means that their goals are probably counter to yours, or maybe they just don't trust you. My best guess is that they're trying to make a profit with this, and I bet it'll be via shady channels.

I think, if you burn the monsters, you can undo whatever they're scheming. The question is, do you want to? You may be able to coerce them into cutting you in on the deal. Keep your options open. Continue investigating. Make your next stop Arkos' personal quarters. Search through his correspondences, see if you can find anything informative or incriminating.

Who do you answer to, anyway? What do you wish to accomplish, ultimately, with your career? Your calling, I guess you could call it.

1. Retrieve samples of the chemical and send them to a doctor you trust and would like to have as a business partner, so that you can synthesize the brain-friendly version. Also, sabotage the foreman's plans. Do this more quickly than the doctor can develop hers and begin selling it before they have the chance to. Go into business mass-producing the stuff.

2. Retrieve samples and send them to the proper authorities, along with the doctor's notes. The doctor and the foreman will be arrested. If you can find records of the right correspondences, you can have the corrupt businessman buyers arrested, too. You'll get quite a bit of recognition for shutting down a big illegal research program like this one.

oh, also consider jamming the safe mechanism so he thinks it's broken instead of discovering our tampering, and also consider rigging the pistol not to fire.
