It's the crack of dawn. Nicolas is there, in front of his computer. There's a cup of coffee at his desk; just the week before he'd sworn off caffeine. This situation warrants a relapse.

Despite all concerns, his beloved captioned website somehow managed to not get shut down overnight. Indeed, prettymuch as soon as he shot Victor, the site's apparently been back online. Indeed, everything's back. The forums, the mirror sites, the front page and gallery...

Everything except the archives.

>Hey guys! Thank you for sticking with us the past few days. The good news is that LOLCATS is back up! Now for the bad news. We haven't been able to contact our archives server in Colorado since the website came back online, and our attempts to contact our workers in Colorado have so far met with failure. Unless the server there comes back online, our gallery is going to be awful empty!

>That's where you come in. We need you to start uploading...

Nicolas had three thousand, five hundred and thirty seven favorites on lolcats dot com.

Every single one of them has been deleted.

Nicolas is genre savvy enough to know that the loss of the archives isn't some random hardware fluke. He suspects it's somehow tied to Victor, Rastin, or this 'Vresch' thing Victor was babbling about. However, he also notices that he did, technically, accomplish his goal of bringing back his favourite website, albeit incompletely.

The question in Nic's mind right now is whether he should focus his efforts on recovering the lolcats archives and saving thousands of funny pictures from being forever banished from the internet, or whether he should instead focus on doing something about the bigass government takeover... thing. Perhaps tracking down this Rastin figure or something.

Each presents its own difficulties. The question is, which do we want to do?

There's a good chance that even if it's possible for us to restore the archives, rastin would immediately find a way to take it down again. I say we get rid of rastin, and then we get our beloved website back.

Nicolas doesn't harbor any hatred towards the site. Sure, they tolerate the horrible, ripped-off /atrocity/ that is ROFLDOGS, but they're a harbor of lolcats, and they also have some cute pictures of other animals on there. It's probably his third or fourth favorite site.

It looks like they're having similar problems. In fact, reading on, it seems as though they use the exact same server in Colorado as lolcats.com. How... utterly improbable.

A road trip to Colorado it is! It may be at the other end of the fucking country, but Nicolas will not be deterred!

Nicolas has already done some banking this morning. His wealth level has risen from WELL-OFF to AFFLUENT. If he holds off on big purchases for the next few days, he may be able to get back up to WEALTHY.

Ha, like that's going to happen.

He's also well-rested. His mind feels refreshed, and his connection to his weird psychic MacGuffin crystal feels stronger. He should be able to perform more psychic feats today, perhaps larger in scope and duration than those he did yesterday. Whoever said it last time hit the issue square on the head - it seems like he'll get better with practice.

FINE. Nicolas will bring the dustbucket along.

Nicolas knocks on the door to wake Joel. He hears a grunt, followed by muffled cursing. Apparently she's still asleep. Wonder why? It's only six thirty!

Alright, so if we're going to go on a road trip to Colorado, we're probably going to need supplies. Nicolas' wealth is sufficient to purchase most minor items, but he only has so much space in his car, and needs to know what to bring.

What should Nicolas bring?

Bring Mappy... and fondly regard your Rudy picture and contemplate where you found it. Maybe also consider taking it yourself for reference to illusion yourself into him to intimidate your foes perhaps one day. That is unless you've fondly regarded it enough to know the image by heart.

Also, lets practice illusions in the safety of your home. Commence "Libra Me From Hell" to play throughout your household for a few verses.

>Repair car
Ah yes, Nicolas keeps forgetting about that. His windshield and passenger window are smashed in, the passenger sideview mirror is missing, and there's a hole in his roof. He supposes he should do something about that. It would take quite some time to repair it at a car repair place, but thankfully, Nic's got that prototype duct tape. He can't replace the missing side mirror, but it repairs the hole in the roof quite nicely. Nicolas also doesn't have enough of the windshield and window glass to repair them, but with some experimentation, he finds that he can recycle glass from old glass bottles to the same ends. Resourceful!

As long as Joel's going to sleep in unreasonably late, Nicolas figures he may as well pack for the voyage and buy what he doesn't have on hand.

Nicolas puts the machine pistol, tommygun, and a whole bunch of ammo into the car. The derringer stays on his person. He also sticks the fuel can from the garage in the car; god, that thing was bothersome to carry everywhere! He also accounts for his laptop, car charger, and high-tech cell phone.

He makes a quick stop into the city to buy food and supplies, nothing epic.

"You know you're just a bit strange, right? I mean, n-nobody just goes to Colorado b-because a website went down." She pauses and drinks deeply from her mug. "But y-y'know, it's just crazy enough. And I sure as hell want to get out of this city. Tell you what, Nic, if you can get us out of here, I'll come along for the ride."

"The entire city has been quarantined by the military. They're not letting citizens through b-because of the zombie epi-epidemic. And the MIB."

"They don't know that the zombie germs are basically fuck-all when it comes to infectivity?"

"I think they'd rather be wrong and keep citizens in, than be wrong and undead."

Nicolas unfurls a map of the city. Right now, there seem to be two obvious ways out of the city - ESCAPE BY LAND, wherein they somehow get past the citizen quarantine, or ESCAPE BY SEA, wherein they leave through the city's port. The first has the obvious advantage of letting Nicolas bring his car along, but the latter is likely to be easier.

We did mention that we're an east coast city, right? It's gonna be a long drive to Colorado.

There is also an airport, but only a fuckwit would try to fly a plane out of a quarantined city, and Nic's pretty sure neither of them is a licensed pilot.

Nicolas is pretty sure that the military will only let by other military personnel; there's also the possibility of hitching a ride on some vessel or another, or simply trying to run over the border at a weak spot, provided there is one. Perhaps one could be created with a sufficient distraction; Nic's not sure.

How do we go about this?

>Falsify IDs.
Nicolas... actually knows where he could get access to the right kind of equipment for falsifying IDs. If he paired an ID with a disguise, he might be able to slip past the quarantine. Unfortunately, there are two of us, and the person with the equipment is not an especially reputable person.

The guy's name is CZ. He's one of the big names in the criminal underground in this city, and is unfortunately also known for having a short temper and a somewhat paranoid personality. The latter is probably what's kept him alive this long. He's also getting into dealing psionics without a license, apparently. The MIB as well as normal government officials are probably both trying to shut that down.

Right now, it looks like Nicolas has to choose between two things. We can either attempt to deal with the crime lord and hopefully acquire some falsified IDs, or we can scope out the perimeter of the city and look for an opportunity of some sort.

Forward! To battle!

Nicolas explains his plan to Joel, who agrees that false IDs might be useful for getting out of the city. She agrees to accompany him down to CZ's. Nicolas also brings Skimbleshanks and Mappy with, so that he can avoid having to return to the house.

He also decides that giving a known criminal mastermind his bank info for a transfer might be somewhat unwise. He decides to withdraw two metric fucktons of money and convert them into briefcases full of cash, which is, of course, the only legitimate way to do business.

Nicolas and Joel are now outside CZ's hideout. Two guards keep watch outside the alleyway; some chick with spikey bracelets and a really shiny sushi knife, and a black guy with beatnick glasses who's whistling to himself. Neither of them pay much attention to the two of them.

"Hello, gentlemen! May I ask you two fine sirs where I may find CZ, for I have business to do with him."

The two of them turn to look at Nicolas. The gaze he's getting from the sushi-knife person is particularly intense. In the background, Joel seems to be palming her face. After a few moments of silence, the hipster-looking guy answers.

"Hey, dog. You want to get to CZ, you gotta get through Roxie and me, hear? And you don't wanna mess with Roxie. She breaks people." His expression is totally blank. It's hard to tell what he's thinking with those shiny glasses on. "No weapons and no psychic junk when visiting the Boss," he continues. "We want all our business to be level, capiche?"

Nicolas has his derringer pistol on him, along with a small host of magic items. The derringer's small enough to concealed carry, but if they check him, they may notice some of his other inventory items.

No point in turning back now. Nicolas subjects himself to the pat down. It's not particularly thorough, but it's still no surprise that the crystal and disruptor are found. The hipster guy takes both of them. "A crystal, huh? Haven't seen one of those since Psych's gang attacked our guys last week. Anyway, I'll talk to Boss."

He leaves for a few minutes, then returns.

"Yeah, okay, you can come through. He says you can't zap him without the crystal, so it should be good."

Nicolas glances to Joel, who seems to have unpacked the machine pistol, and is now fiddling with the clip. She notices him.

Nic... isn't sure that's a cat statuette.

Actually, Nicolas isn't sure what it is. This little... figurine... thing is, at best, a horrible crime against nature. It looks as though some perverse, cthulhu-worshipping cult tried to come to grips with the conception of 'cute' and churned out this Nightmare Fuel of a figurine.

Its pose and general shape suggest that it's supposed to be a dog, but its ears and facial shape are more catlike than doglike. It also has a superfluous tuft of fur under its swinelike nose give it the appearance of having a mustache. Even the way its ears are swept seems to resemble devil horns better than any living animal's ears.

No, Nicolas does not want this Mustachioed Cat Pig Devil Dog.

The bread, however, is kind of cool.

"How much for the bread and cat statuette?"

"That bread sustains all of existence, mister Psion," says CZ. "It can only be destroyed in the DEPTHS OF HELL, and when it is, ALL EXISTENCE WILL BE CONSUMED. ... so I'd say something like five hundred, six hundred dollars."

... right.

"What about that thing up there?" Nicolas asks, pointing to the middle object.

"Ah. That's my BRAIN PROTECTION HAT. It protects me from PSIONS like you and that crazy bitch Psych. ... except she somehow penetrates its defensive barriers." He furrows his brow in thought.

"... right. Um. Well, before we get down to business, I suppose I'd be interested in buying the lava lamp and the bread."

"The bread that will END ALL EXISTENCE?"

"Yeah, that bread."

Nicolas has no idea why he's doing this.

Seven hundred dollars later, Nicolas has the bread and lamp in his inventory. He figures it's time to get down to business, then.

"I'd like to use your forgery equipment."

"Hahaha. Of course you would. You want to make military ID cards, don't you? The military fears me and my equipments' masterful forgeries."

Nicolas informs CZ that he can go for one (1) briefcase full of money, and in return, he'll let the guy in on some secret protections against psions like Psych. CZ's tone dramatically changes.

"That, mister Psion... that is an acceptable deal."

Nicolas proceeds to inform CZ about how his powers don't seem to work on anything yellow. He also says that 'psychic resonance' from large dangly earrings interferes with them, and tells CZ that his tin foil hat failed him because it hasn't been properly microwaved yet. Tin foil hats only work because they've caught purely focused microwaves.

"You certainly did."

Her cell battery's good, but it's not getting a signal at all. It was at three bars before, so she can only assume something happened to the reception tower.

You know. All of them in the city.

Goddamn MIB.

This is a pretty simple building, though; Joel's seen buildings like it before. It has two SIDE DOORS leading into alleyways, and a MAIN ENTRANCE. Since this building's being possessed by a crime lord and allegedly unoccupied, the main entrance has likely been closed off.

It also has a FIRE ESCAPE.

The 'main entrance' seems to be a side door in the alleyway. That's where the MIB stormed when they came. They left a few CARS here, along with a driver / guard who met the wrong end of her Glock 17.

Joel currently has a MACHINE PISTOL ( 20/30 ), a GLOCK 17 w/ laser sight ( 16/17 ), a bullet-resistant vest, a cell phone, and a pack of mint gum.

ALL THAT OTHER SHIT is in Nic's car.

That was a little easier than Nic expected. Looks like the Conservation of Ninjitsu is in full swing here. Hopefully now he can head down and pick up his Derringer. He'd like to get out of here before the next squad comes with rocket launchers or a tank or something. Apparently they know him well enough to recognize him on sight, and considering he just killed their SIC yesterday, they probably have all the reason to hunt him to the ends of the earth. All the more reason for leaving the city, he supposes. Then he and Joel can be ROAD WARRIORS, maybe fend off agents in a high-speed chase or...

Here's a surprise for you: CZ has some very interesting conceptions about brofisting. Something about secret handshakes, the illuminati, and the cheese grater industry, Nicolas stopped paying attention.

He does manage to thank Nicolas and Joel for their assistance, though, even if Nicolas IS trying to eat his brain.

Roxie also approaches Nicolas. "Your gun." She says.

>Let the doobie be. We need to GTFO.
Yes, better to do this. We're on the home stretch, we really need to get out as soon as possible. Nicolas decides that now is the prime time for Ging TFO.

He and Joel arrive in an alleyway across from the burning building. Nicolas inches his way towards the street, keeping an eye out for MIB and other vehicles, but nothing approaches.

Eventually, he gets a glimpse of the street outside. There's a lone MIB sweeper standing in front of a butcher shop. Nicolas' car, as well as one of the MIB cars, is parked nearby.

The person looks vaguely familiar. Nicolas can tell from his glasses that he's a bottom-rung Sweeper, but his gun doesn't seem to be standard issue. Actually, it looks like it's pretty deep in the heavy weapons category. Nicolas thought only Scrubbers had those?

"Oh shit," whispers Joel. "Nic, that's Bubbles."

"Bubbles?" Nicolas asks.

"Bubbles. H-His real name's Charles, but we call him Bubbles because he's chewing gum all the time."

"This is the guy you knew from the MIB, right?"

"Right. He's a sweeper like I am- er, was, but... actually, he's very overqualified for the job. I mean, very."

"... how very?"

"Well, um. He'd probably be a Special Agent or Scrubber by now, if he didn't keep b-breaking procedure. W-we're not allowed to chew gum at work, see."

Wow. That's stupid. That's... very stupid. Nicolas can't believe how stupid that is. Nicolas can't believe how backwards the organization is. THIS IS NOT HOW IT WORKS. Mooks are the guys who go down in one hit, Supervisors are the tough-as-hell baddies. That's how it's supposed to work! None of this taking down Victor in one shot and then being stopped by a mook with a grenade launcher bullshit. God, Nicolas cannot believe how non-Tropes-compliant this goddamn evil organization is.

At least they're snappy dressers.

"I-I'd rather not kill him if we don't have to," says Joel, "but I'm ready to do it. He's... very stupid and loyal. Like a big dog or something. I-I don't think he'd join us."

Right. It looks like he hasn't detected the two of us yet. We need a plan!

Probably not that much, come to think of it. It's just a small telekinetic gesture to pull the trigger.

Main problem is that Nicolas would rather not blow up his own car.

Just to be clear, Nicolas can do much more today than he could yesterday, as he's gotten more used to his powers. Both illusion-wise and telekinesis-wise, he should be able to do significantly larger feats than he did at the mayor's office.

>Enter street area under the pretenses of being an MIB hostage.
Alright. Joel leads Nicolas out into the street at gunpoint. Sometime during the planning process, the sky has clouded over, and it's begun to rain. Bubbles notices their approach.

"Excuse me! You two. Stop. I need to..." he pauses, and then tilts his head a few degrees. "... Joel?"

>Pretend that you were made to leave at gunpoint.
Joel puts on her best game face. Her charm's only average, but with luck, any slip-ups will roll off Charles' thick skull. She takes a shot at it. "B-Bubbles," she says, mustering as much professionalism as she can. "I got him. T-This asshat. He... took me away. At gunpoint. And interrogated me!" She prods him in the back. So many things wrong with this. Like why she's not beat up, or why she's wearing a brand new suit that's clearly not hers. She's going to have to count on him being pretty thick...

Bubbles stares at her dryly and pops his gum. "Huh. I was wondering where you went. Said you threw a hissy at boss and quit, and... I thought you had become disloyal. That would have been a shame, because... I'd totally have to kick your ass. Even if you've been a good partner." He peers down at Nicolas. "But why would he interrogate you? He had just shot our second in command, you think he'd be going into hiding."

That... is an unusually intelligent observation for Bubbles. He failed to notice all the other problems with her story, but he did wonder why the hell Nicolas would bother abducting a random sweeper. Joel... hesitates. She doesn't have an answer prepared, crap!

This would be a good time for Nicolas to jump in.

Nicolas first finds the quarantine border. Not a problem. He throws a blanket over Mappy and Skimbleshanks, as well as a slew of extra weaponry they're keeping in the back seat. Best not to raise suspicion. Nicolas pulls out his and Joel's false IDs and drives up to the border.

He is, naturally, stopped right at the border. A military officer approaches him, and he rolls down his window.

"Excuse me, sir, but this city is under quarantine. Only members of the armed forces may exit, and to be honest sir, you don't look like the..."

Nicolas hands him the two IDs. He furrows his brow and pushes them into a little card-reader thingie. ... damnit, CZ. This better work.

The thing gives an affirming beep, and he grunts, handing them back. "... well, the cards check out okay," he says. "But you're still suspicious, so I can't let you through just yet. If you're on duty, why aren't you in uniform, and why are you driving a civilian vehicle?"

This would be a good spot for a cover story.

Sounds good. Let's stop off at a gas station to fill up and fill some cans, then get out of here.

And we could tape it to the hood. It will terrify and demoralize all who would stand before us!

Ran into some zombies. Vehicle totalled, uniforms a mess, so you appropriated a new one and switched outfits.

Or might he buy something about undercover scouting..

"We've been trying to inflitrate Paraply for some time now, as you can see by our MIB uniforms. We recently discovered a secret base of theirs, and we're moving to investigate. Military uniform would give us away in a moment!"

If he asks where the yellow shades are, say they are annoying to drive with, so you took them off. I hope you have them with you in case he needs to see them.

We have shades. We stole a pair from a mook back in chapter one.

Put those on. Say "What did you THINK I was doing in there?"

When he answers, interrupt with "Shhh!"

Yeah, we have MIB shades. Multiple pairs, actually. Nicolas holds up a pair. "I'm afraid the details are classified."

The officer looks down at him. "... and you didn't have time to change back into a proper uniform?"

"I'm afraid we couldn't sir. Our ride got trashed by zeds, and our uniforms were contaminated. We thought it most prudent to take the undercover car."

He looks thoughtful for a moment. Nicolas can practically hear the DM rolling a sense motive check.

"Arright, sonny. You're clear."

Oh thank god.

"Thank you, sir."

"Any luck with the artillery?"

"Nah," he says. "That damn crystal keeps intercepting it, and we want to avoid reckless civilian casualties."

Right then. Nicolas rolls up his window. That went pretty well. Onwards! Towards Colorado, and...

Nicolas' connection to his crystal is getting stronger! But how do his powers improve? That's up to you guys. So get it right, bitches.

Nicolas' crystal currently has two powers: MINOR TELEKINESIS and MINOR ILLUSIONS.

MINOR TELEKINESIS lets him lift Mappy-sized objects with a little effort, and at its fullest extent can let him throw a person, albeit with hella FEEDBACK.

MINOR ILLUSIONS allow Nicolas to create simple visual and audio illusions, and at its fullest extent, could be used to overlay an illusion onto himself, creating a disguise, albeit with hella FEEDBACK.

There are three things we can do:
-Improve to Telekinesis (Moderate)
-Improve to Illusions (Moderate)
or
-Develop a new power at (Minor) level.

Things that Nicolas strains to do now become routine at Moderate level. Essentially, he can throw people-heavy objects around at will with MODERATE TELEKINESIS, or use disguise self at will with MODERATE ILLUSIONS.
New powers begin at the MINOR level, which is about the same level of capability Nic displayed today.

Any votes for a third power should simply be 'NEW POWER'; otherwise specific power choices will be watered down.

So guys. Three options:

TELEKINESIS++?
ILLUSIONS++?
NEW POWER?

Have fun.

As of the time of this posting -

New Power: 6
Telekinesis: 8
Illusion 3

Alright, voting closed! I got a lot more responses than I expected to. Thanks for voting, people. <3

It looks like Telekinesis beat out New Power by two votes, so we'll go with that.

See you next chapter!
